Clenched jaws, tight and cursing why
Worries so many, this sleepless night
When cast upon the window, that sight
Of a moonless, starless empty sky
And turning fan, no heat dispelled
Like burning hell, yet freezing ice
And restless tides of sleep, they swelled
Yet they could not reach my eyes
What shadows play upon the walls
And tricks of light, and animal’s calls
And far far away, a whispered hoot
Of passing life, so seldom mute
Come wash upon me, O sweet sleep
Come visit me, I can only weep
And wait and wait, until it comes to me
And suffer in silence, on bended knee…
